DPS Teachers Protest Condition of Schools

Activists take to social media to share images of the schools’ conditions.

Troy High is one of the top ranked schools in the nation. However, less than 45 minutes away, schools in Detroit are suffering from poor conditions and budget deficiencies. Teachers from Detroit Public Schools have taken a stand against the school board by participating in “sick-outs” instead of going on strike, which is illegal in Michigan as of 1994. The teachers are banding together and using their sick days simultaneously, leaving virtually no staff left to teach in the schools during the sick outs. These sick outs often force school closures. DPS teachers are also spreading awareness about the conditions of the school by posting pictures of everyday occurrences on their Twitter account, @teachdetroit. They say activism will continue until conditions are fixed.
