In Troy High School, seniors Josie Lido and Kaitlyn Jarbow run the Jazz and Orchestra Club for the first year. According to Lido, the club has been running for 3 years now and is “usually ran by people in the Jazz ensemble” particularly seniors. Jazz and Orchestra Club is meant to provide a space outside of commitment for fun and learning Jazz. Jarbow explains, “We teach Jazz, the members of the club learn Jazz and we play different songs like jazz charts.” Through Lido and Jarbow’s leadership, they are trying to elevate the club through more performances and more music for people in the club. According to Jarbow, the club is even “hoping to perform in 2025” at places such as the Open Air Fest or the Brookdale Retirement Home.
According to Lido, the club saw an increase in the number of members this year. Lido shared that she was pleasantly surprised that the club went from “a handful of kids from band” to 30 or more new members of both band and orchestra kids, as well as singers.
One of the newest members and singers of the club is senior and choir vocalist Alexandra Eichenlaub. Eichenlaub describes the club as super fun and educational as she is able to touch up on Jazz much more than in the past and is “getting better at learning the stuff through practice.” This year Eichenlaub has already learned basic jazz techniques like swingwhich Lido helped teach her. She even complimented Lido stating, “Josie’s good at explaining things, it’s really informative.” Eichenlaub praises the club for their educational tactics and welcoming environment.
Jarbow and Lido have both been involved in the club since they were underclassmen. They both have watched seniors run the club each year and inspire them when they were younger. So to change the perspective and be inspiring to other people is really important to both leaders. Lido expressed her love for jazz stating that she is extremely passionate about jazz, so it is “really cool to see that other people are and I can help them do stuff.” Jarbow agrees with Lido, as she hopes that the club is as inspiring to the new members now as it was inspiring to herself when she was younger. Lido also added on, exclaiming, “It feels so great, I love the full circle moment.” To be a part of this inspirational club go to the band room Thursdays after school and let Kaitlyn Jarbow and Josie Lido work the magic of jazz.
