Sparks Pinball Museum has just recently opened up at Oakland Mall, just off 14 Mile road. Despite the old machines, pinball continues to be a popular attraction for many, and this new locations definitely caters to that ideal. But does it live up to the hype? I went to find out.
The first thing you notice when you enter is the price. For about $15.00, you have unlimited freeplay for about an hour. With over 120 games, that definitely gets your money’s worth, especially since other arcades often charge on a per-game basis. What about the games? Here are some of my personal favorites.
- Rush
This machine is on the newer side. While it may not have the charm of an older machine, it makes up for in the shear amount of stuff it has. Almost every time you flip the ball it goes somewhere and does something. There are chutes, targets, and gimmicks galore here. Themed on the band Rush, it plays into that theming with references to the band’s songs and albums. The machine also features a sort of rumbling device that gives tactile feedback when you hit a target. Because it’s new, it’s flippers are responsive and strong, giving you good control over the game. Overall, Rush makes for an exciting and versatile game experience, and is definitely worth a shot for all skill levels. 10/10
- Dungeons & Dragons
Themed after the popular role-playing game, this table is also on the newer side. Manufactured by the same company, Stern, that produced Rush. This game sets traditional pinball rules aside, and incorporates elements of Dungeons & Dragons into it’s gameplay. By scoring points, the player advances through a fantasy game and completes minigames to earn bonuses. While on the complicated side, is an interesting twist on a decades-old concept. In addition to it’s multiball minigame, it features a variety of targets and themeing appealing to any player. A must play for anyone who is a fan of the original game. 8/10
- Fire
An older machine, made by the very popular Williams Gaming, this is a pretty standard game. Though the lower playfield is a bit empty and the flippers are a bit sticky, it has an interesting gimmick, random targets that you must shoot at to earn points. It also has a “stopper” that prevents the ball from draining in the first few seconds of gameplay, which is a welcome sight to beginners. I would definitely try this one out if you are new to pinball. 7/10
- Two Player Pinball
Absolute madness. If you come with a friend, you must place this game. It’s chaotic, complex, I never understood what was going on, and I loved it. You are each given a ball on a play field and must try to score points by aiming for your opponents goal. There is also a post-game round where no less than 10 balls are sent into play for an absolutely amazing time. Simply amazing. 11/10
Overall, Sparks Pinball offers a variety of well-maintained games at a reasonable price. Being so close, you ought to spend a Saturday checking it out. Bring a friend or two, and be sure to check out their sister location in Chesterfield. Just make sure you don’t drop the ball.
