Speeches On Steroids

New Ted Ed club coming to Troy High

TED Talks have been incorporated into many lessons, exposing students to a number of different ideologies produced in official TED presentations. Tedx’s, which are held in locations such as high schools and colleges, are independent events for anyone who wants to present a Ted Talk.

Sophomore Molly Myers and speech and communications teacher Harriet Clark have been in the process of starting a Ted-Ed club here.

“[Myers] came to me last year wanting my help starting a Ted-Ed club,” Clark said. “Being a speech teacher, I was interested in it as well, so we partnered up and made it happen.”

The TED website describes TED-Ed as follows: “TED-Ed is TED’s youth and education initiative. TED-Ed’s mission is to spark and celebrate the ideas of teachers and students around the world.” TED-Ed is a section of TEDx that focuses more on letting teenagers and students present in front of audiences.

Clark described the process of starting this club as taxing and concluded they need to be ready for the hectic start.

“Starting a Ted-Ed club is a bit unique because it is a copyrighted organization,” Clark said. “You have to go through a selection process and get their permission to [start].”

No matter the outcome, Myers is ready to start meetings with Ted Ed if they’re approved.

“Through TED, we’ve been given a 13 session guide on how to run meetings, which we’ll use once things kick off”, Myers said. “We will meet in Mrs. Clark’s room and discuss our ideas for TED talks”.

Clark and Myers hope to have the club up and running either this school year or the next, depending on TED’s response.
