Every year, the French Club hosts a scavenger hunt in the spirit of Halloween, even though a scavenger hunt isn’t directly related to French culture, In France, Halloween isn’t that much of a big deal. Most kids don’t go trick-or-treating, but sometimes they will have parties.. Senior and co-president Michelle Cai says that when you do it with friends, the scavenger hunt is a good time.

“[The scavenger hunt] is an event, but it’s more of a fun side event [compared] to what we usually do,” Cai said. “I like how we’re able to bring a bit of French culture into the bubble of Troy High.”

The event took place on Oct 20. Club members first started with a small presentation,  after which they went to the nearby woods to hunt for Halloween themed paper cut-outs. Each group was given one picture to find, like a pumpkin or a witch. Whoever came back first and had the most of their picture got a prize.

“I think it’s a fun, more active way that we get people to come [to French club],” senior and co-president Kathy Gu said. “Having this in [the club] certainly encourages people to come.”

The club usually meets every month in room 140, at most meetings, the club will watch a French movie and eat cultural food. Gu says that other times, they play a game that further exposes members to French culture.

“I take French and we learn a little about culture, but French Club itself lets us explore a little deeper,” Gu said.

Both Cai and Gu have been in French Club since their freshman year. Gu says she loves French Club because it gives her a chance to share French culture with other people who don’t take French language classes. In addition to covering French culture they also delve into other French speaking regions, like Quebec and Belgium.

“We go outside of France,” Gu said. “[We] include countries in North Africa and South America, too.”

Beyond the scavenger hunt the French club also plans to continue their yearly tradition of Christmas caroling at Brookdale Troy, an assisted living facility.
