Always Putting Himself Out There

For some, high school can be boring and uneventful, but for senior Max Guitar, it’s anything but. Throughout his high school career, Guitar has been in many clubs and afterschool activities including Knitting Club, IASA, Detectives Club, football and Cereal Club. But some might recognize Guitar better from when he MCs pep assemblies.

“I liked to MC the pep rallies,” Guitar said. “It put me right into the thick of the chaos, and chaos is where I flourish.”

With so many people watching during pep assemblies, it can be hard for many people to get up and talk in front of everyone, but Guitar says that he does not get nervous when talking in front of people anymore.

“I used to be [nervous],” he said. “But then I started to try to put myself out there and it was so freeing; I felt I could spread my wings and fly.”

Sometimes getting up in front of a class can be scary, let alone talking to a gymnasium filled with peers, but Guitar knows how to help combat those fears.

“If someone asked me ‘How do I get more involved in school? I’m scared,’ I would tell them to listen up and listen good,” he said. “What’s the worst that can happen? You mess up once or twice? You can’t be afraid to mess up; that’s no way to live.”

This coming fall, Guitar will be starting college at Michigan State University, and though he is ready for a change, there are still things he will miss.

“I’m gonna miss the people here,” Guitar said. “There has been so many memorable moments that I’ll always cherish.”

As Guitar finishes up high school, he has come to realize what an effect his classmates have had on making him who he is today.

“Honestly, a lot of my peers inspire me,” Guitar said. “I see all the good they’re doing—all the activities they’re engulfed in—and it challenges me in a strange way to up the ante with my ‘involved-ness.’”

When one becomes a senior there are many things he or she can do that not many other people in the school get to experience, like go to prom. For Guitar’s promposal he was inspired by the movie “Karate Kid.” Before watching the movie, Guitar was trying to find a way to ask his prom date in a way that she would like, but after watching “karate kid” he decided to ask using something he liked and the whole plan changed.

“After all! If I do something true to myself, then she’ll literally be saying yes or no to who I am, not who I’m ‘trying to be,’” Guitar said.
